A friend of mine once composed a beautiful song that began, “Rainy day, wash these tears from my heart away.” Would that it would be so.

And the French poet Paul Verlaine wrote a poem called “Il pleure dans mon coeur” -- “It rains in my heart.”

Our wonderful, magical, wise, selfless, fun-loving mother is gone. We could not keep her forever, although we wished we could. A Christmas baby at birth, a Thanksgiving mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin and friend at the end, what more could anyone ever have wished for? Time stood still when you were with her – she always made each of us feel important and treasured.

When I read the following words written by someone else when death was approaching,
I thought of Mama, and so I share them with you today:

“And now, weak, short of breath, my once-firm muscles melted away, . . . I find my thoughts, increasingly, . . . on what is meant by living a good and worthwhile life – achieving a sense of peace within oneself. I find my thoughts drifting to the Sabbath, the day of rest, the seventh day of the week, and perhaps the seventh day of one’s life as well, when one can feel that one’s work is done, and one may, in good conscience, rest.”

Rest well, dear mother.

My thoughts are with the family of Helen. I feel so fourtunate to have known Helen because of her daughter and my friend Mary. Helen was always positive and enjoyed life to the fullest. She will be sorely missed and I will miss Mary and my yearly visits with Helen. Bless you Helen and rest in peace.

In the difficult days to come, may the memories of your mother give you comfort until the words of Isaiah 35:5,6 are fulfilled.
