When one speaks of leaving the world a better place than when you found it, we think of you, Don. When I recently heard the St. Francis of Assisi prayer, you came to mind. As an instrument of peace, you sowed love of your beautiful Paula, children Wes, Mitch, and Madeline, family, friends, and acquaintances. You brought light into a room and your laugh was contagious. You brought joy to others, understanding and knowledge of so many things. You consoled, gave of your time and friendship, understood much, and it is in your passing that so many of us feel your loss very deeply to where you will forever remain in our hearts. We grieve when the loss is so great it takes a lifetime for our hearts to mend. May the heavens be brightened and more comfortable by all the man glitter you are creating. You got there a little sooner than we have. Thanks for saving a place for us.

We met Don at Emily Blozinski Bowden’s wedding in October 2021. He officiated my niece Emily and her husband Ed’s wedding. Even though our meeting was brief as we witnessed the wedding of Emily and Ed, Don touched our hearts and left an impression of a man committed to doing whatever it takes to fulfill other people’s joy and happiness. Truly a man living life for others. Peace to all of Don’s family.

I am so sorry to see this.

I haven't spoken to Don in years. He was a great college friend at Stout to many. Back then he was exactly as described above. A barrel of fun and a listening ear.

Paula, my deepest sympathy. I too, have married my best friend. I can't imagine what you and your children are going through.

I know you have many precious memories to give you smiles. His spirit continues in your children and in your heart.

Peace to you.

Jane

My heart ache’s when I think of Don’s passing, he was taken far to early & I will forever miss him. I had the utmost respect for him & loved him like a brother. I think of Don as a true Renaissance man, which is defined as “a person who has wide interests and curiosity, as well as an expert in several areas.” I never met a man who had such a wide & varied array of interests. He was incredibly curious which paired nicely with his many talents. Most importantly he never hesitated to share those talents with family & friends. He was a bear of man, a rugged outdoorsman, but his heart and soul was gentle and loving. He definitely was one with nature, he truly enjoyed his solitary time in the forest and fields. We teased him about how he attracted wood ticks, calling him a “tick magnet”. Don was also somewhat of a paradox, one minute discussing the philosophy of life, a minute later belching like a drunken sailor. He was a complicated man, but above all else he loved his family, Paula, Weston, Mitch & Madeline. Uncle Don was loved by all his niece’s and nephew’s, he treated them with the same love and affection as his own kids. Simply said Don Huepel was one hell of a man, I will miss him, every one that knew Don will miss him but nobody, nobody will ever forget Don.

So many fond memories. Don made an everlasting imprint on our twin boys from a very early age. From cutting their hair after I made a disaster out of it to cub scouts and teaching them how to pitch a tent. All taught in his kind and patient demeanor. So many wonderful memories that will last forever. Our son Chris just recently enjoyed a family day to Madison with Don, Paula and Wes to attend the Canoe Courpia sports show. Paula, Wes, Mitch and Madeline, we are so very sorry and heartbroken for you.
