Gary Robert Schmaus
June 27, 1952 - August 5, 2022

Of Germantown. Schmaus, Gary Robert; beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away in his Germantown home on August 5, 2022  at the age of 70 surrounded by the love of his family after a short and courageous battle with cancer.

The only child of Orpha and Robert Schmaus, Gary was born in Milwaukee on June 27, 1952.  He grew up in Menomonee Falls, and at the age of nine he found a love for competitive swimming.  He graduated from Menomonee Falls High School in 1970.  After high school, he continued his love for swimming, receiving a scholarship as a Northern Illinois University Huskie.  In 1977, he achieved his dream of graduating from Marquette Law School as a Juris Doctor and shortly after began working as a private practice attorney.

Gary enjoyed practicing family and criminal law and one of his greatest joys was acting as a guardian-ad-litem as he had a special place in his heart for children.  He was a constant fixture at the Waukesha and Washington County Courthouses and a proud member of the Washington County Bar Association.

While Gary always enjoyed practicing law, his true passion was for his family and friends.  He loved his children and grandchildren with his whole heart.  For Gary, family included everyone he cared about as well as his special four-legged friend Blitz.  Holidays often included friends who were displaced or did not have family in the area.  Summer Sundays were reserved for swimming with grandkids and barbequing, while winter and fall included Packers Football and hot ham.

On June 21, 2001 he married the love of his life, Mary Piotrowski and together they celebrated 21 years of marriage.  They enjoyed spending time with family, trips to Florida, and hunting for his beloved shark teeth.

Gary leaves behind many friends and family including; his wife Mary; in-laws Don and Alice Piotrowski, children; Jennifer (Michael) McKenzie, Jessica (Javier) Badillo, Dustin (Maureen) Schmaus, Dillon Jablonski (Amanda Valentine), and Justin (Nicole) Fulwiler; grandchildren; Conor, Jacqueline, Kelsey, Mikel, Morgan, Jack, Rylee, Sofia, Camila, Ezra, Eden, Eli as well as couple of bundles of joy that are on the way; and great-grandchildren; Jaylyn, Kashton, and Layla.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents as well as his son Adam Schmaus.

The Schmaus Family would like to extend a special thank you to Heartland Hospice, the team at Froedtert Cancer Center of Milwaukee as well as the staff of CFAC floors 8 and 12 for the wonderful and kind care he received.  In addition, family and friends who helped in every step along the way; especially Steve and Sue Sorenson, Mallory Luckow, Andrea Zabel and Vicky Williams.

“Let the love I have for you live in your heart forever.  I’ve been so happy loving you.  So I’m going away, but not forever.  Forever.” -Wilson
