Thomas John Muth
November 29, 1938 - March 1, 2017

Like the true Warrior he was, Tom battled several long-term conditions before being called home by the Lord to watch the Marquette/Xavier game in Heaven on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the age of 78 years. We know Tom gave us that win.

Tom was born in Milwaukee, WI, and grew up on Pewaukee Lake. His beloved parents were William and Marion (nee Mueller). He graduated from Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha in 1956. He earned his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Marquette University in 1962. Tom had a long career as an engineer, first in the public sector. He served as village engineer for the Village of Fox Point, before relocating his family to the Village of Germantown, where he served as that community’s engineer for many years. His career eventually led him to the sewer and water contracting industry, which allowed him to improve the quality of life in many Wisconsin communities.

In his younger leisure life, Tom was an avid golfer. With many industry friends, he was a member of the Wisconsin Underground Related Material Suppliers (WURMS) group, and those colleagues also enjoyed golfing. An offshoot was the PPGA (Piss Poor Golfers Association), of which he was a proud member. Later, Tom was very involved in his parish, St. Mary, Menomonee Falls, and served as parish trustee for many years. Tom also loved reading throughout his life. He loved all subjects, and eventually moved from his treasured hard copies to a Kindle with ease.

Tom was devoted to his wife, Barbara (nee Dohr) and their family was blessed to celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary last October. Tom was extremely proud of his four children: Karen, Catherine (Lyle) Brummer, Michael (Patti nee Christensen), and Peter (Wendy nee McLellan). His family misses his “Muth Sense of Humor” and mostly his presence.

Tom was even more proud of his grandchildren, Margaret Muth Brummer, Noah Brummer, Rowen Brummer and Olivia Muth. To say he loved them is an understatement.

Tom has three siblings: the late William (Mary nee Dowling), Marilyn “Sue” Nettesheim, and Robert (Sharon nee Frieders). He is also survived by Barbara’s sisters: Carol (Alfred) Spitza; Catherine (Olen Clyde) Watts, and Mary (Stephen) Uhrina. Tom also deeply loved his nieces and nephews, and his special godchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Parish (N98 W16215 Cleveland Avenue, Menomonee Falls, 53051) on Wednesday, March 8. Visitation will be from 10 am to 12 noon at church, followed by Mass. Lunch will follow. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Mass will be concelebrated by close family friend Reverend Gregory Greiten and St. Mary pastor Reverend John Burns.

In lieu of flowers, we (and Tom) would appreciate donations in his memory to St. Mary Parish in Menomonee Falls, or the Marquette University College of Engineering. (Please direct donations in Tom’s memory to the Joseph N Dohr and Edmund N Dohr Scholarship Fund c/o Marquette University, PO Box 1881, Milwaukee, WI, 53201.) Joseph and Edmund were Barbara’s father and uncle, who both earned engineering degrees from Marquette in 1929. Tom and his two sons, as well as his brother William and nephew Alfred Spitza Jr., continued this longstanding family tradition, all earning engineering degrees from Marquette.

In the end, Tom humbly accepted the help he needed. It is with deep gratitude that we recognize and thank Dr. Daniel Duffy for managing Tom’s health carefully and thoughtfully for many years. We honor the staffs of Seasons Hospice and Tender Reflections in Germantown for their open arms and devotion to Tom in his last weeks. We are also extremely grateful for the many friends who supported us through Tom’s journey.
