Deborah graduated from Brookfield Central in 1981 and later UW-Milwaukee with a MBA. She started her career in the banking industry and moved to Chicago for a short time. When she returned she worked for her dad, Greg, before going to Lakeside Mfg and later Lavelle Industries as the CFO. She was also on the board of directors for Fox River Bank before our plans changed and we looked west to moving to Arizona where she landed a job as a CFO in Tempe at the same time we got the news of her cancer. She never took that job. After treatments she began working part time at Wisconsin Metalworking Machinery and even did some work from the hospital during her stay.
Anyone who knew Deborah knew she was a special person. She was always thinking of others and gave her time and talents to many organizations. We met when we were both volunteering for Channel 10/36. During the next years she held various church positions, she helped out with many Waterford Chamber events, worked on the books for Absolutely Waterford, volunteered at Feed My Starving Children, supported Love, Inc with major donations and also many other organizations or events that may have been one time opportunities.
I saved her biggest love for last. She helped start a knitting and crocheting group at our old church called the “Knit Wits”. She had only missed 1 of their retreats and was a regular at their Saturday Knitting gatherings. Through the years the group has donated several thousand cancer caps, shawls, lapgans, afghans and other homemade items to area hospitals, nursing homes and others in need. Last year she made a full afghan in red, white and blue for a veteran who she had never met until they shared the finished product. She loved to crochet and it helped her relax. Through her crocheting she met her two best friends, Maddie and Kathy. In recent years she was never far from her bag of yarn and whatever project she was working on at that time.
Lastly, if you have a favorite memory or picture with Deborah that you would like to share with us we will have a separate picture board set up for you to bring a photo or copy to post that memory.
