Susan Wheeler Astrin was born in Milwaukee to Tina (Clementine) and Henry Mielcarek. She grew up with an older sister Genevieve Vuksta in Whitefish Bay, WI and graduated from Whitefish Bay High School.

Susan married early in life and became mother to six children.  (John William Wheeler passed in infancy.)  Susan was a devout Catholic and was known for her empathy and philanthropy.  She was an active member of Ladies of Charity, Meals On Wheels and St Mary's Hospice Center.   She volunteered at various shelters and churches.
