Lura Doroles Stockinger
January 3, 1923 - April 6, 2021

Lura Doroles (Rieken) Stockinger, passed away on Tuesday April 6, 2021 at Heritage Senior Living in West Allis,Wisconsin. Lura was born January 3, 1923 in Prescott, Wisconsin, the daughter of Oscar and Mollie (nee Becker) Rieken. She was baptized and confirmed in the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Prescott, Wisconsin.

Lura grew up on the family farm in the Oak Grove Township in Pierce County. She attended a rural elementary school and went to high school at Prescott High School, where she graduated in 1940 as valedictorian of her class. She then went on to college at River Falls State Teachers College. She attended 2 years and earned a Teaching Certificate to teach rural grade schools and village schools. She taught one year in a rural school (Mero) and one year in a village school (Plum City).

She then joined the Armed Services, U.S. Navy WAVES, August 1944, for basic training and specialty school at Hunter College, New York City. Upon completion of these two schools, she was transferred to the Fleet Records Office in San Francisco, California She lived in a hotel converted to private rooms and worked at Fleet Records for the rest of her Navy Career, until she was discharged in May 1946. She promptly enrolled in River Falls State Teachers College again to continue her studies for a degree in Primary Education. She completed her studies in June 1948, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education. She got a job as a first grade teacher in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

She met Jack Stockinger, whom she married July 21, 1952, in Wauwatosa.  Lura continued to teach until their first child, Jean, was born, June 14, 1953. Lura and Jack had 3 daughters (Jean; Janet, born January 4, 1955; and Judy, born February 4, 1958). When Judy was 3 years old, Lura returned to teaching first grade at the same school where she had previously taught. Jack's health was not good; he had surgery on his legs which kept him home for several years. The girls continued their schooling throughout high school in Wauwatosa, went on to college, then to their jobs and to marriage and children.

Lura continued teaching first grade until her retirement in 1985. Jack retired the same year.  Jack and Lura celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary July 21, 2002. Jack passed away December 2008, and Lura moved into an apartment in Wauwatosa where she lived until she fell in 2011. She then moved to Heritage Senior Living in West Allis, where she lived until her death.

Lura was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother and sisters. She is survived by her children, Jean Collins, Janet (Ken) Vetter, and Judy Ward; her grandchildren Charles Collins, Margaret Collins (Benjamin Jellicoe), Melissa (Chad) Whittinghill, Andrew Vetter, Mark Vetter, Brandon Ward and Christopher (Jessica) Ward; her nieces and nephews; and her friends.

Visitation, Saturday, April 10, 2021 from 10:00am until Time of Service at 11:00am at Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home, 10121 W. North Avenue, Wauwatosa.  Interment Highland Memorial Park, New Berlin.  Memorials to the Wauwatosa Public Library Children’s Section or Women in Military Service for America Memorial appreciated.
