John passed away unexpectedly on September 1, 2023 at the age of 59 years. He was a beloved husband to Sara for 30 years and proud father to Morgan and Riley (fiancee Elsbeth). John was a loving brother of Mary (Tom) Prescott, Patti (Ted) Sovey, and Sue Smeaton. He was also a loving uncle to Colleen (Ross Mitchell) Sovey, Meghan (Ryan) Lashua, and Katie Sovey. John is further survived and will be dearly missed by many cousins, other relatives, and friends. 

John was preceded in death by his parents John W. and Mary L. Smeaton, along with his In-laws, Dardis “Buzz” and Mary A. Jacobson. 

John was originally from Brown Deer, Wisconsin. While John was growing up he could always be found playing sports such as football, baseball, golf, softball, and more. He graduated from Brown Deer High School and later graduated from UW-Whitewater in Economics. During college he spent his summers working as a Duck driver in Wisconsin Dells surrounded by family and friends. John was a devoted employee for Flight for Life as an accountant for 31 years. There wasn’t a sport he didn’t love watching, playing, or coaching.  John was an especially avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, as well as the Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Bucks.  John shared his enthusiasm for sports with Morgan and Riley as their coach for soccer, basketball, baseball and softball.

Visitation is Friday, September 8, 2023 at Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home, N84 W17937 Menomonee Ave in Menomonee Falls from 10:30AM until time of the Funeral Service at 1:30PM, followed by burial at Sunnyside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Diabetes Association or the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation would be appreciated.
