Dick was born Richard Daniel Hitt on June 30, 1931, to Henry “Rube” and Ella (Moore) Hitt. He was the youngest of eleven children and grew up in Sturgeon Bay, WI. After graduating from high school in 1949, he moved to Milwaukee where he met Margaret Mary Scherwenka. They were married at St. Leo Catholic Church in 1954 before Dick was drafted into the Army and they moved to Fort Lenord Wood, Missouri. After moving back to Wisconsin, Dick returned to his position working for the City of Wauwatosa in the Engineering department, while also attending night school at Marquette University. In 1961, Dick graduated from Marquette with a degree in civil engineering, however he missed the graduation because their fifth child was born that day. Over the next 30+ years, Dick continued his career with the City of Wauwatosa, eventually becoming the head engineer for the City of Wauwatosa. Dick retired from the City of Wauwatosa in 1992.

After raising seven children and retiring in 1992, Dick and Marge built a house on Lake Michigan in Clay Banks WI, on the same property that Dicks dad, Rube had built a cottage on in 1924. Dick and Marge lived in Clay Banks for the next 20 years, where they loved to entertain family and friends. During that time, Dick took pride in volunteering as the caretaker for the Clay Banks Cemetery. Although that kept him busy, he still never missed a biweekly trip to the Blood Center in Green Bay to donated platelets. Dick and Marge often traveled for a few months in the winter as “snowbirds,” spending time in Gulf Shores, San Antonio, Pheonix and Palm Dessert.

In 2012, Dick and Marge decided to move back to the Milwaukee area to be closer to their children, grandchildren, and eventually great grandchildren. Since then, they have spent time residing in Mukwonago, Slinger, and Germantown.

Dick was an active member of St. Mary’s Parish and often volunteered as a coach, scout leader and Athletic director while his children attended St Mary’s grade school.

In 1970, Dick went to St Mary’s to ask Monsignor Carl Eschweiler to come to the house and baptize their seventh child. Monsignor said that he would do this for him, but asked a favor in return, for Dick to become an Extraordinary Minister of Communion. Dick replied to him saying “I am not worthy of that,” to which Monsignor replied, “Neither am I” ...

Dick proudly served as an Extraordinary Minister of Communion for over 50 years.

Dick is proceeded in death by his parents, ten siblings, a daughter, Mary Alyce Hitt and a son, Daniel Richard Hitt.

Dick is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret Mary (Schwerwenka), His children Patrick (Renee) Hitt, Steve Hitt, Bill (Michele) Hitt, Tim (Deniese) Hitt and Jennifer (Mike) Schwingshakl. He is additionally survived by 11 Grandchildren, 18 Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. All of which he adored.
