Martha A. Kath
May 23, 1948 - March 14, 2025

Martha Kath passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025, at her home in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, at the age of 76.

Martha Ann Elsbernd was born on May 23, 1948, to Leo J. and Helen R. (Hemesath) Elsbernd in Decorah, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. Francis de Sales. Martha was raised on a farm outside Ossian, Iowa, where she learned the value of hard work. The most important life lesson Martha learned was to play the hand she was dealt. Martha never complained about anything and seemed to be at peace with the choices she had made. She completed her education at De Sales Grade and High School, where she participated in various activities, including 4-H. She went on to earn her nursing degree in 1969 from St. Mary's School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota.

Martha met her first husband, Steve Kath, in Rochester, Minnesota, and they were united in marriage in July 1972. Together, they had three children: Kylene, Kindra, and Karl. Martha and Steve settled in Waukesha, WI, in 1983 to raise their family. She worked as a dedicated nurse for many years in Wisconsin, where she met some of her most treasured friends. Martha had a long career as an RN supervisor, assistant director of nursing, director of nursing, regional RN, and concluded her distinguished nursing career as an MDS specialist in Chicago, IL. Martha was a deeply cherished mother, adored and respected by everyone who knew her.

Martha found love again and married Thomas Richter May 4, 2001 on Okauchee Lake. Martha and Tom enjoyed taking trips on their Harley, traveling, and spending time with their loved ones. She genuinely enjoyed playing cards, reading, doing puzzles, baking (especially pies) and playing on her iPad. Martha's smile was contagious and could light up any room. One of the things that Martha cherished most was being a grandmother. She would never miss a significant life event to see and support her grandchildren. Martha was a long standing member of St. Anthony's parish. She found solace and strength in her church community and faith. Her faith was a constant source of comfort and peace.

She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Tom Richter; her three children, Kylene (Matt), Kindra (Jon), and Karl (Sarah); her four grandchildren, Emma, Caleb, Brielle, and Isaac; and her sister, Lori Whittle.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Mary Elsbernd O.S.F.

Martha's family would especially like to thank the care team at Froedtert Cancer Center in Menomonee Falls and all the caregivers at Hearts to Home. Martha was not only generous in life, but also in death as she made the decision to donate her brain to cancer research.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Medical College of Wisconsin for continued glioblastoma research and treatment.
