Roger passed away peacefully in his home November 4, 2025, at age 93. Preceded in death by his loving wife Marcy, daughter Denise Merkel, son Bruce Merkel, daughter Lisa Merkel, grandson Mathew Merkel & great grand-daughter Emery Fields. Survived by daughters Debra (Wayne) Kiekow, Julie Merkel (Jim Palmer), Sandra (Rick) Neault. Also survived by 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. 

A United States Army Veteran, Roger served honorably in the Korean War, he was proud to be part of the legendary "Wolfhounds". He loved serving Veterans at the annual VA picnic & selling poppies for Veteran causes. He made many friends through Legion/VFW Post 449, affiliations, he was a true Patriot. Roger continued his service later in life as he tasked himself, his son Bruce and grandson Brian, to restore, repair & clean many monuments at the Wauwatosa Cemetary including, requesting and receiving the replacement of a Revolutionary War soldier's monument. Roger loved fishing, golfing, metal detecting, carpentry & buildings things, including Legos. A 50 year member of the Alano Club on Prospect Ave. in Milwaukee, he met many wonderful people over the years, including his lovely wife, Marcy.

A very special thank you to all of the medical staff and caregivers from the Zablocki VA medical center, Aurora Hospice and Synergy Home Care, Roger received amazing unconditional care.

Rest in Peace Father, you are safe in the arms of Jesus.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home 10121 W. North Ave. Wauwatosa from 10am until time of service at 1pm. Roger will be laid to rest with his wife Marcy at Wauwatosa Cemetery with military honors following the service at the funeral home.
