Joan Marie Hollenstein

Joan Marie Hollenstein, age 93, of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 4, 2026. Born on September 29, 1932, in Hartford, Wisconsin, Joan was the beloved daughter of Frank and Esther (Walter) Hollenstein. She grew up in Milwaukee, attending St. Sebastian’s and St. Thomas Grade Schools and graduated from Holy Angels High School in 1950. Joan began a lifelong career in travel, working for several airlines including SAS, KLM and Capital Airlines. Her first international trip to Cuba in 1953 sparked a true passion for exploring the world. While working for Capital Airlines, Joan met the original owners of Elm Grove Travel and became an owner of Elm Grove Travel in 1965. She later co-owned Elm Grove Travel with her sister-in-law, Sue Hollenstein. Over the years Joan visited six continents. She retired as a respected travel planner and business owner in 2007 During her time at Elm Grove Travel, Joan mentored many new travel advisors, instilling in them the importance of attention to detail and exceptional customer service. Her dedication and love for travel inspired countless others to see the world. Outside of her career, Joan enjoyed golf, gardening, home decorating, shopping and spending time with friends and family. She will be remembered for her quick wit, infectious laughter, love of a good happy hour, and the countless stories of her adventures. Above all Joan cherished making memories with those she loved. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Esther, her brothers Jerome (and his wife Carol), and Walter (and his wife Jean). She is survived by her brother John (Jack) Hollenstein, and his wife Sue (Nick) Hollenstein, 13 nieces and nephews, numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews, and many cherished cousins and lifelong friends. Joan’s family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring and dedicated staff at The Arbor, the Memory Care Unit at Dickson Hollow in Menomonee Falls and the compassionate team from Brighton Hospice. To honor Joan’s wishes, there will not be a funeral service. In honor of Joan’s memory, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association
