Sally Yates Long
November 8, 1941 - April 26, 2026

Sally was born to Dallas Roe Long and Elizabeth Barber Long in Moyock, North Carolina. The family eventually resettled in Virginia. After graduating from high school, Sally enrolled at the College of William and Mary where she earned her B.S. in 1993. Sally went on to earn her Ph.D. from the University of Florida, Gainesville in 1967 and followed that with a post-Doctoral position in Genetics (1968-1970) at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Not one to give up education and traveling, Sally became a research associate at the Laboratory of Teratology, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. In 1971, Sally joined the Medical College of Wisconsin as an Assistant Professor of Anatomy. Sally joined the Deans Office in 1978, ultimately becoming Associate Dean of Student Affairs. In 1987, Sally joined University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee as a Lecturer. Sally retired in 2003.

November 24th, 1973, Sally married Franklin David Loo, MD. They had two sons; Jonathan David (Laura) and Geoffrey Yates (Michele). The families grew to include six grandchildren. Tyler David, Kayleigh Marie, Elliott Viola, Ashley Elizabeth, Evan William and Valerie Rose.

Sally is survived by three brothers: John Dallas (Mary) Long, Bruce Barber (Barbara Fisher) Long and Stephan Clark (Ann) Long. Nieces and nephews include Polly Long Foote (Michael), Amy E. Long, Hillary Long Doherty (Kevin), Michael Dallas Long (Erin) and Emily Long Davis (Ralph).

Music was a huge part of Sally’s life. She was a member of the UUCW Choir and the Harmony Singers.

As you might have guessed for her education history, Sally loved to travel. One amazing trip was driving from Paris to Toulouse with no fixed itinerary. Stopping at different towns and villages on a limb, visiting different chateaus in the Loire valley. In time cruises replaced the pick up and go travels.

Sally will be interred at the Milden Presbyterian Cemetery, Sharps, VA.
