Eric J. Rietz
January 14, 1967 - April 28, 2026

Eric James Rietz, of East Troy, Wisconsin, passed away on April 28, 2026, after a courageous battle with ALS. He was 59 years old.

Eric was born on January 14, 1967, in Owatonna, Minnesota, to Larry and Priscilla Rietz. He was raised in Owatonna alongside his brothers, Joel and Todd, in a family that valued hard work, loyalty and kindness, values Eric carried with him throughout his life.

Eric attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison and later earned his law degree from Northwestern University School of Law. He built a respected career as a construction attorney, a profession well suited to his thoughtful, steady and practical nature. He approached his work with care and integrity, earning the trust of clients and colleagues alike, a responsibility he never took lightly.

Eric was previously married to Elaine Landwehr, and together they raised their two children, Alex and Isabelle. Being a father was one of Eric’s greatest sources of pride and joy. He cared deeply for his children and remained closely connected to their lives, always offering his support and guidance.

Eric’s favorite place in the world was his cabin on Lake Beulah in East Troy, Wisconsin. The lake was where he felt most at peace. A member of the Lake Beulah Yacht Club, he loved sailing, long days on the water, and time spent at the cabin with family and friends. In recent years especially, lake life brought him comfort and joy.

Eric had a wonderful sense of humor that those closest to him came to cherish. He was quick with a witty comment or perfectly timed remark, often delivered in a way that made it all the more memorable. His humor had a way of easing difficult moments and leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to share in it.

Above all, Eric was a genuinely good person. He was kind, thoughtful and sincere, with a calm presence that put others at ease. He didn’t seek attention or praise and was always willing to help. Those who knew him will remember his warmth, his patience and the steady way he showed up for the people he cared about.

Eric was preceded in death by his father, Larry Rietz. He is survived by his mother, Priscilla Rietz of Edina, Minnesota; his children, Alex and Isabelle Rietz; his brothers, Joel (Goi) Rietz of Edina, Minnesota, and Todd (Krissy) Rietz of Effingham, Illinois; his former wife, Elaine Landwehr of Evanston, Illinois; and many extended family members and friends who will miss him deeply.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Jeff and Shari Mueller of Mukwonago, Wisconsin, cherished friends who provided unwavering support to Eric during his illness. They also express special thanks to Angel Love and Care, LLC, and St. Croix Hospice, whose compassionate care made it possible for Eric to spend his final days at the cabin he loved so dearly.

A memorial service celebrating Eric’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday May 30, 2026, at the Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home in Mukwonago, Wisconsin. There will be a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service.  In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the ALS Association (www.als.org), in honor of Eric’s battle with ALS.
