Age 88 years. Ray was predeceased by his beloved wife, Virginia, and his brother James. Ray was born in Rochester, NY, to James John Hayes and Rose (nee Gucker) Hayes Young. He is survived by daughters Marcia (Joseph) McCloskey, Sarah Hayes, and Julia (Paul) Muzenski; granddaughters Robyn McCloskey, Kathryn and Audrey Muzenski; half- brothers Robert (Louise) Young, Jack (Donna) Hayes, and Timothy (Dr. Rosalind) Hayes; half sister Marsha Hayes; sister-in-law Elaine (Fred) Wilmarth; nieces and nephews.
Visitation Thursday March 30, 2017 from 10:30AM until 11:45AM followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 12Noon at LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2750 W. Mequon Rd., Mequon. Private family interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Capstone Engineering Society Univ. of Alabama (www.give.ua.edu) or the church.
Ray was an accomplished engineer and an avid chess and bridge player. He belonged to Triple Nine, Intertel, Mensa, US Chess Federation (1st Category), Capstone Engineering Society – Univ. of AL, Tau Beta Pi, and multiple professional Societies. He attended the University of Alabama, graduating with a BS in Industrial Engineering (1954). He was a Registered Professional Engineer and Certified Manufacturing Engineer, a 150th Anniversary Distinguished Engineering Fellow - College of Engineering at the Univ. of AL, and taught at PA State Univ. and Waukesha County Technical College. His engineering career began at General Electric in Erie, PA, then as VP of Operations for Geo. J. Meyer Mfg, NWL Control Systems, and McClean-Anderson. He also worked as an overseas Project Manager for Pullman Swindell. His work took him across the world, visiting at least 18 countries.
His best work was as a devoted father, grandfather, and friend. His good advice and unwavering support will be missed by those he has left behind.
