Shears Family,
It was truly an honor to have known and worked with Doug at Briggs & Stratton. I will always remember his positivity and ability to tackle challenging technical issues. God bless his soul?

Your loss is heartbreaking. Doug was an inspiration to all of us. I was lucky enough to work with Doug for many years and appreciated his positive attitude, curiosity and initiative. There wasn’t a challenge he backed away from even as he battled cancer. He made the world a better place and left a lasting impression on all of us who were lucky enough to know him. May your many memories be a comfort to you during this difficult time.

I have been friends with P. Douglas since 1984 as a Knight of St. Francis de Sales. We grew up in the same neighborhood along with Lawniczak and Terpinski. They went to GESU. I went to St Pius. X, so we really didn't know each other until High School.
While we did not have a lot in common academically (I was in the dumb group with about 4 others in our clan), we did have a great deal in common sports wise, musically, etc. Eric Clapton concerts (Doug yelling "slowhand" used to crack me up; still does), going to the Frozen 4 in Detroit, playing soccer for the Toledo Bohemians, Cedar Point trips, and driving fast in Doug's "Rice Rocket" were some of my best memories.
His bachelor party was a blast. A Tour of Lakeside brewery and then off to Das Boot and other fine watering holes was how the agenda materialized. Laura was so good to give us each a piece of paper with their address and phone number. It was like she had a crystal ball knowing I would get separated from the group and walk into a biker bar to “make new friends”.
I was so happy when he was able to make the trip for Men’s Weekend at Camp de Sales. All of us had our sons there, which made it that much more special. I think that was the last time we were all together.
We didn't really know it at the time in high school, but St. Francis de Sales would be our first fraternity. The friendships forged over those years are some of the friendships I value most. I was truly blessed to have known Doug, and will miss him for the rest of my days.
