Faith and church were central to Harold's life. His parents brought him to holy baptism as a little child where God adopted him as his own and never left him. As a young, married adult, Pastor William Fischer became his mentor and friend. He helped get Redemption Lutheran Church on 68th street established as Milwaukee grew westward. He sent all his children to Lutheran elementary and high schools. When the Milwaukee federation of WELS churches wanted to establish a Christian Lutheran men's organization, they called on Harold, who set up "Welsmen." After moving to Tennessee, he and Margaret worked tirelessly with Pastor Chuck Westra to establish Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in Spring Hill. Every week, Harold made evangelism calls with the pastor.
Harold taught all his children the importance of weekly church attendance and they all learned from him the joy of singing hymns of praise. People knew he was in church when they heard his booming singing-voice.
Harold's grandfather was a German Lutheran school teacher in Russia as was his great and great-great grandfather, etc. His father came to America for freedom and safety, but now the family tradition continues. He encouraged a number of his children to consider full time Gospel ministry. His oldest son spent his adult life as a Lutheran school teacher and professor. His oldest daughter married a pastor. Another son serves as a pastor. Now, three grandsons are Lutheran pastors as well.
More importantly, Harold often said with humble pride that all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren know Jesus as their Savior and are faithful churchgoers. That was to him the greatest blessing in life.
