"Bernie" Passed away peacefully surrounded by family in his Mequon, WI home on January 17, 2015 at 87 years of age. He was born on January 14, 1928 to John and Mary (nee Roith) Zwiefelhofer in Boyd, Wisconsin. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Mary (nee Apple) and their children, David (Rita Mullen) of Madison WI, Linda Costa (Julio) of Oak Ridge NC, Laura Elbakkal of Hopkins MN, Paul Zwief (Jennifer) of Cedarburg WI, Lisa Hebenstreit of Albuquerque NM and Peter (Sarah) of Whitefish Bay WI, and grandchildren Miles Mullen, Charles Mullen, Daniel Costa, Elise Costa, Laila Elbakkal, Kareem Elbakkal, Ryan Zwief, Benjamin Zwief, Samuel Hebenstreit, Timothy Hebenstreit, Lewis Zwiefelhofer and Jack Zwiefelhofer. He is further survived by his sister Claudia Ryba of Rice Lake, WI and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother John, and sisters Elaine Overman, Delores Ripienski and Jeanette Overman. 

He left the family dairy farm in his teens to serve in the Navy during the tail end of World War II. After the war he re-settled in Milwaukee. An avid dancer, he met his wife Mary at a YMCA dance. He owned and operated Bernard’s Beauty Salon in Glendale, WI for 35 years. He was a passionate card player, skier, tennis player, golfer, sailor and fervent patriot. Bernie's family cherished his zest for life. They feel blessed to have had him in their lives and will always remember his big, broad smile. 

Visitation Friday January 23, 2015 from 11:00am until time of Funeral Mass at 12:00pm at Lumen Christi Catholic Church, 2700 W. Mequon Rd, Mequon, WI 53092.  A luncheon will follow after mass. Entombment of cremains will be at Saturday January 24 at 11:30AM at  Resurrection Mausoleum in Mequon, WI. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. 

Bernie’s family is ever so grateful and appreciative of the special care of all the private caregivers over the years and would like to extend a thank you to Compassionate Care Hospice during  the last few months.
